Telling Sustainability Stories for Australia’s Biggest Supermarket
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for Woolworths — it’s a core part of their brand strategy. But communicating sustainability initiatives to consumers is genuinely difficult. The topics are complex, the supply chains are opaque, and consumers are increasingly sceptical of corporate greenwashing.
Woolworths needed a way to tell their organic farming and food waste reduction stories that felt genuine, engaging, and shareable. They chose animation — and they chose Motion By Design.
Organic Farming Animation
The organic farming animation needed to accomplish something tricky: explain why organic products cost more while making consumers feel good about choosing them.
We created a vibrant, character-driven animation that followed the journey from organic farm to shelf. The visual style was warm, approachable, and distinctly Australian — rolling green hills, real farming practices, and the people behind the produce.
Food Waste Animation
Food waste is a confronting topic. Australians throw away billions of dollars worth of food every year. Our food waste animation took a playful creative approach — using visual metaphors and surprising statistics to make viewers think differently about their food purchasing and storage habits. The tone was optimistic rather than guilt-inducing.
Why Animation Was the Right Choice
For sustainability storytelling, animation offers advantages that live-action simply can’t match. You can visualise supply chains, show data in engaging ways, take the viewer inside processes they’d never see in person, and maintain complete control over tone and messaging.
Animation also travels well. These pieces work on social media, in-store screens, the corporate website, investor presentations, and internal communications — all from a single production investment.
