How to Plan a Corporate Video Shoot, Step by Step

Two models styled for Madison Accessories product launch video

Planning Makes the Difference Between a Good Video and a Great One

After producing hundreds of corporate videos for organisations like SA Power Networks, ResMed, Woolworths, and SA Health, we can say with confidence: the quality of your planning directly determines the quality of your final video.

Step 1: Define Your Objective

Before anything else, answer one question: what do you want this video to achieve? Common objectives include brand awareness, recruitment, internal communications, product demonstration, customer testimonials, and event coverage. Pick one primary objective.

Step 2: Know Your Audience

Who is watching this video? Where will they see it? What action do you want them to take after watching? A recruitment video targeting graduates looks and feels completely different from a safety training video for experienced workers.

Step 3: Write a Clear Brief

Your brief should include the objective and target audience, key messages (no more than three), brand guidelines and tone of voice, technical requirements, timeline and key dates, budget range, and examples of videos you like. We’ve written a detailed briefing guide with a downloadable template if you need help.

Step 4: Pre-Production Planning

This phase includes concept development, scriptwriting, storyboarding, location scouting, talent casting, scheduling, and equipment planning. At Motion By Design, we handle all of this for our clients.

Step 5: Prepare Your People

Brief them on the video’s purpose. Share questions in advance for interviews. Advise on wardrobe — avoid thin stripes and busy patterns. Schedule specific time slots. And reassure anyone who’s nervous.

Step 6: Shoot Day

If pre-production has been thorough, shoot day should be the easy part.

Step 7: Post-Production and Review

Post-production includes editing, colour grading, sound design, music, graphics, and captioning.

Step 8: Delivery and Distribution

Plan your distribution strategy before production begins so the content is optimised for where it will live.
